We all know the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Author and motivational speaker Dr. Tony Alessandra uses what he calls the Platinum Rule, which is “Do unto others as they would have done unto themselves.” Each person is unique and we should treat them that way. If I followed the Golden Rule, for instance, and I like surprise parties, then I would try to throw a surprise party for all my friends because that’s what I’d like. The Platinum Rule, however, reminds us that not all of us enjoy surprise parties. Some of my friends might prefer other birthday presents like phone calls, cakes, or cards. Treat others not as we want to be treated, but as they like to be treated.
