Treat people fairly, not equally. Treating people fairly does not mean that you treat everyone the same. If you are playing a game of cards, fairness says everyone gets the same number of cards from a deck. If you are treating everyone equally, everyone gets the exact same cards. That would make for a pretty boring game! If you are on a crowded bus with an elderly person who requires a seat, equality would dictate that everyone should share the time they stand and sit on the bus. That wouldn’t make much sense! The fair thing is to allow that elderly person to have a seat. Based on people’s backgrounds, circumstances, and experiences, treat people fairly.
